Seen and Protected: Louisville Fire
Hydrants Get a Rust-Proof Refresh
Project Details:
Fire hydrants rank among the most overlooked pieces of municipal infrastructure — until the moment they’re needed. Across Louisville, Kentucky, years of sun, rain and road grime had left a portion of the city’s hydrant fleet showing their age: dulled color, worn enamel and the early signs of surface corrosion creeping across exposed cast iron. When Louisville Water Company set out to restore a selection of hydrants across the city, the project called for more than a fresh coat of paint, it required a coating system built to hold up against the elements for years while giving neighborhoods a visible sign of civic upkeep. HPP Industrial supported and supplied that coating.
A fire hydrant spends its entire service life outdoors and unprotected, exposed to constant temperature swings, moisture, road salt and UV — conditions that will degrade an underperforming coating within a few seasons. Hydrants are functional emergency equipment first, so a finish that flakes or fades doesn’t just look neglected; it can compromise the visibility crews depend on in an emergency. Louisville Water Company’s goals were twofold: restore real corrosion protection to hydrants showing wear, and refresh their appearance as part of a broader community beautification effort. That combination pointed to a coating built for both durability and a bright, lasting finish.
Crews turned to Rust-Oleum’s ROCAlkyd® Direct-To-Metal Alkyd Enamel V7400, sourced through HPP Industrial. Surfaces were cleaned per SSPC-SP 1 to remove dirt, grease and other contaminants, followed by hand or power-tool cleaning (SSPC-SP 2/SP 3) to strip loose rust, mill scale and failing prior coatings from each hydrant.
V7400 was then applied direct-to-metal, giving crews a single-step system that dries tack-free in as little as two hours, a real advantage on a project covering hydrants scattered across the city. The alkyd enamel is built for exactly this kind of service: a hard, chemical and abrasion-resistant finish that resists chipping, fading and weathering, backed by a two-year rust-proof guarantee.

The results speak for themselves. Hydrants that had faded to a dull, chalky finish emerged with a smooth, high-gloss coat in vivid, true-to-spec colors — restoring both the visibility and the visual consistency the city depends on. It’s the kind of transformation that’s easy to spot on a walk through the neighborhood, and it’s exactly the outcome a community beautification initiative is designed to deliver.
While the specifics of the municipal contract remain confidential, the Louisville hydrant project is a clear example of what HPP Industrial brings to public infrastructure work: product knowledge, a coating system suited to demanding outdoor service, and the distribution support that keeps city crews moving efficiently through large-scale maintenance work. It’s a small piece of infrastructure, repeated hundreds of times across a city, and proof that the right coating does double duty, protecting critical equipment while giving a community something to be proud of.
